Why hire an experienced professional photographer for your wedding? A look at what cell phones (and your uncle Bob) can't do!

More of these comparisons at the end of the blog!

When Sophie and I were first asked to shoot someone’s wedding we felt incredibly unqualified. And after ten years of experience now shooting weddings, I can honestly say that we were in fact, incredibly unqualified. Not only because we barely knew how to use our cameras but because there was SO much we didn’t know about documenting a wedding.

So, what is the value of experience?

In a lot of ways I still feel like I did two years ago: Unqualified. But, I’ve been thinking about how I’ve been doing this for ten years now. Which is crazy to think about. But, what does ten years of experience really give you when it comes to wedding photography? I’ve compiled a list of what I think makes hiring an experienced professional photographer so important. I’ve also created a comparison of photos between what a cell phone sees and what we see. Examples of this later in the blog!

(I don’t want this to seem like I’m and old man yelling about how the kids don’t “get it”. I love working with young or in experienced photographers. I’ve taught classes. Done mentorships. I’ve even had multiple students accompany me at weddings in order to get the experience they need. I would just be terrified not only for the wedding couple but for the photographer to be given the main photographer role at a wedding without the proper experience.)

We have seen it all

I could tell you story after story of what we have seen and experienced. Nothing surprises us anymore. We are prepared for basically anything. Pouring rain 5 minutes before a ceremony, multiple cake blunders, cakes not even showing up, nervous breakdowns from the bride and groom, huge fights between the bride and groom, family arguing, rogue wedding planners, audio speakers falling in the middle of the reception, broken cameras, broken lenses, memory card troubles. The list could go on and on. But the point is: we’ve seen it all and we are prepared for it all. From the equipment we carry to our experience in handling very difficult situations. This is an ability that ONLY comes from experience.

We can help you plan your wedding day

If you have not checked out our wedding day planning blog, I highly recommend it! We have helped plan and schedule many of our weddings in order to create the most stress free environment that we can. Check out the blog for al of our thoughts and ideas! A professional photographer not only has that knowledge to set up the schedule in order to create space for great moments to happen, but also the skill to sense special times and the skill to quickly change camera settings in an instant or re compose a photo in a way that most in experienced photographers are unable to do.

We sense moments before they happen

A professional photographer not only has the knowledge to set up the schedule in order to create space for great moments to happen, but also the skill to sense special times and the skill to put themselves in a position to document them. We have the ability to quickly change camera settings in an instant, re focus the lens, or re-compose a photo in a way that most in experienced photographers are unable to do. You can be the greatest photographer in the world but without that experience, you will not have the skill necessary to sense and capture those moments that make up a wedding day. I’ve seen much better photographers than me deliver less than average wedding photos and it is not because of their skills as a photographer but rather their lack of knowledge and learned skills that only come from experience. In each case, the couple was incredibly disappointed with their photos. Photos you don’t get to redo.

What cell phones cant do

Cell phone cameras can do amazing things. But they are incredibly limited in their ability to adjust in difficult lighting situations. Have you ever tried to take a photo with your cell phone on a sunny day? One of two things probably happened. Either the photo was too bright and the background was completely whited out or the subjects were incredibly dark as the camera attempted to properly expose the background. This is because the camera is very limited in its settings. Yes, you can take an amazing photo on portrait mode. But only if the lighting is at least pretty good. You may ask why I bring this up. Twice last year I heard of wedding where they only used cell phones to capture their moments. Although, I do love the rawness and candidness cell phones give you, what a professional photographer can bring you is worth far more than saving a few bucks and only using cell phones. I have spent over 10,000 hours perfecting my craft. As I know many other photographers have. The peace of mind knowing you trust your photographer to document your story in the most creative and beautiful way possible is priceless. Stay tuned for a bit of a comparison between the two…

We see things differently

This blog could be 3000 words long but I doubt anyone would read the whole thing. So here is the finale. Professional photographers do not see things the same way as other people. When it comes to what makes a great photo, we are not looking for the same things. A beautiful setting or back drop is just the beginning of what makes our work beautiful. So what are we looking for? LIGHT. We are always looking for light. Where its coming from, how much of it there is, who it is on, and how can we use it to create something special. Weddings are incredibly unique in that they are events that photographers rarely get to control their settings or the amount of times they have to get photo. Experienced wedding photographers like us know how to use whatever light or time they have to capture moments. We’ve been forced to take photos in the darkest of rooms and the brightest of skies. We obviously have venues or settings we like more than others, but no space scares us anymore. The more of a challenge we face just means we get to be more creative. At least 10 times during a wedding day someone will come up to me and tell me where I should take photos or even where they’ve seen other photographers take photos at the venue. We love suggestions. But, even if other photographers have used a space, it does not mean that it would work for us. That photographer may have seen something differently that day. The lighting could have been different. Their couple may have fit better into a particular space. There are so many factors when it comes to the areas we chose to take photos of our couples. My favorite part is seeing the looks on people’s faces when they see where we do decide to create those moments to capture. I will use the hallway to a bathroom (and I have multiple times) if the lighting is right. you see, most people just see a hallway to a bathroom. But I see something different…

What most people see…

What we see…

you see, we don’t see the same thing. And I promise, you will be glad that we don’t. When you hire a professional photographer, you are hiring someone who you can trust that no matter what the circumstances, you are going to have your wedding documented by someone who sees the things you can’t see. Someone with the knowledge and experience to capture your special moments. In a dark room, outside in the bright sunlight, in a tent, in a party bus. And sometimes all of those in one day. Your cell phone is not capable of creating the images we do. And neither is your uncle bob. Unless of course he is an experienced wedding photographer. Someone who can turn a bathroom hallway or a random field in a city or many other unexpected spaces into magic. See below.

How to schedule your wedding day in ways to create less stress and get incredible photos!

A question I get asked all of the time is, “How should we schedule our wedding to get the best photos?” I love this question because it means that the couple is really considering their photography and will create their schedule in a way to give us the best opportunity for great photos. My answer is simple: the best way to get good photos is to create the least amount of stress during the wedding day as possible. Sophie and I have come up with a few ideas that we think will help!

Two “must do’s” when scheduling your wedding day.

  1. Be with each other as much as possible! We will get more in depth with this idea in a coming blog post but it is amazing to us how little couples are actually together on their wedding day. The more you are together, the more relaxed you are and the more opportunities we get to document those little unplanned and unposed moments.

  2. Create the schedule to be as flexible as possible. A plan is important, but things happen. Always. In 7 years of wedding photography, I’ve never been a part of a wedding that 100% stuck to its’ schedule. Creating as much flexibility in the plan as possible allows everyone to stay relaxed and just go with the flow. Helpful tip: If you think something will take an hour, plan for an hour and a half. Any extra time you end up with just means more time to be together and possibly more photos!

Some ideas for the day:

  • Get ready in the same location or even the same room. We are serious about this being together stuff! But, also getting ready near each other allows us as photographer to be available to both people as they get ready. It also allows the parties to communicate if things need to be discussed.

  • Have all details ready to be documented. We love details. Any detail that make your day uniquely you is what we love! If things like your dress, accessories, and flowers, etc. are organized and available, as soon as we get to the venue, we can document as many of them as possible!

  • First look, first look, first look. If you follow us at all, you know we love first looks. So much so that I wrote a blog about them. But, nothing opens up a schedule and lowers the stress of a day like a first look. If you would like to know more about what that is, check out the blog i wrote!

  • Family photos done quickly and efficiently. Yes, we do family photos! The best way you can help us with these is by discussing as a couple before the wedding day who you would like in the photos. After you’ve decided, inform the requested family members that they will be in photos. Another helpful tip: request the officiant to let the family member(s) know where the photos will be taking place and to stay there until they are dismissed. It saves a huge amount of time and stress when you are not searching for Uncle Joe.

  • Attend your cocktail hour, and enjoy it! At this point in the day, we will have had plenty of opportunities with the two of you. We will also have all family photos and bridal party completed. Now is the time to grab a drink and enjoy time with your guests. Or to sneak away for a few minutes of alone time. Or to even take more photos if you want! Either way, the point is that the time between family photos and the reception is yours to enjoy.

  • Get everything done at the reception as quickly as possible. Get all events/ceremonies done as soon as you make your entrance into the reception. This includes cake cutting. first dance, speeches etc. This will allow you to relax and enjoy your reception rather than constantly wondering what is next.

  • We may steal you away for some photos during the sunset. At some point in the evening, we will approach you and request a few minutes for photos during “golden hour,” (as seen in the photo at the top of this post.) This is by far the best time of the day for photos. The lighting is soft, warm, and beautiful. This also gives you just a few more minutes to spend with your new bride/groom!

Here’s the best part! When Sophie and I are not tied to a rigorous schedule, we are free to pay attention and document the moments that are unplanned and unposed. These are the moments you will remember forever. These are the moments that make Sophie and I love what we do!

Thanks for reading.

Free engagement session when you book with us? Here's why!

Engagement photo blog 10.jpg

One thing you would notice as you take a look at our wedding package is that we offer engagement photos for no extra charge. The obvious thought would be that we just include the price of those photos in the wedding package. But this is not the case. They are in fact, not considered at all when creating our wedding packages. This is because we view these sessions as the most important thing we do. I know that sounds kind of weird so I wrote this blog to share a couple of reasons why.

Relationship is everything to us.

First and foremost, they allow us to get to know each of our couples and hear their story. It also allows our couples to get to know us and hear our story. We are not able to get the types of images we get unless we have developed a relationship we work with. Our engagement shoots often last several hours giving us plenty of opportunity for conversation and time to hang out when we are taking any photos. When we arrive the morning of a wedding, it’s more like seeing old friends then it is an employee showing up for a job. This allows us the ability to capture those intimate moments as we get there.

Having your photo taken is awkward at first, for everyone!

We do very little posing. Instead we try to create a space for our couples to be themselves and a moment that we can capture. Being comfortable in front of the camera isn’t natural for most people (including myself). But, over time it’s gets much easier and we love to get that awkwardness out of the way during an engagement shoot instead of during the wedding day. EVERY couple we’ve ever had leaves the engagement shoot feeling more comfortable in front of the camera then they were before the shoot. They even start to enjoy it! The process of getting to know our couples and watching each of them really open up to us in front of the camera is something I enjoy most about what we do.

So, what does a typical session like this this look like?.

Every experience is different. Our goal is to find a location or activity that has meaning to our couples. We find they are able to relax and be themselves much more easily in a space that is familiar. (We love shooting in a couple’s home!) We are also willing to travel in order to make our couples feel as comfortable as possible. Even as far as Tennessee!. While scheduling these sessions we try to allow for quite bit of time to spend together, usually an entire evening. As we like to say, creativity takes time. And, so does getting to know someone! Also, who doesn’t love engagement photos during a gorgeous sunset?

We hope you enjoy a few photos form our most recent shoots and thanks for reading!

Maya and Skip- a wedding of Croatian tradition

At the end of the day someone came up to me and said, “you two must be exhausted. They basically just jammed three days of tradition in one day!” Skip and Maya’s day was magical and packed with so much heart and meaning. We’ve never done this before with a blog post but this wedding was way too magical to not share as much of it as we could. So, this wedding is going to be spread out over two posts.

Part one is Maya’s Croatian tradition. The ceremony begins with a bartering between the groom and the father of the bride. After the bartering is complete, the groom is presented with a fake bride. After a few laughs, he is then given permission to see his bride. This is one of the coolest moments we’ve experienced as wedding photographers. After a moments moments together, the bride and groom were greeted by their friends and family. The wedding guests then enjoyed some authentic Croatian food while a band played Croatian music in the background. It was quite the party. And this was only the beginning of the day!

Enjoy part one of Maya and Skips incredible day.

Katie and Adam in Grand Rapids

Michigan weather is absolutely insane. When I left for the photo shoot, it was 41 degrees and raining in Flint. When i got to Grand Rapids, it was 70 degrees without a cloud in the sky. So instead of dodging some rain, we were running around Grand Rapids trying to find some shade from the hot sun. I had a blast hanging out with Katie and Adam and their son Brody. Also a huge thanks to Kelly (Katie’s sister) for hanging out with Brody for us!

The couple said they wanted their photos to show Grand Rapids in a bit of a different way than most people have seen before and I hope we did that. We hope you enjoy their story and much as we do!

Meredith's senior photos inspired by Fleet Foxes

Meredith 178.jpg

When Meredith asked me to do her senior photos, I asked if she had any sort of inspiration she wanted for the shoot. Her response? “I want photos to look like if Fleet Foxes music became photos.” DONE. I was incredibly inspired by this request. I love Fleet Foxes and they are a band I feel fits my style of work fairly well. The only problem was that the shoot we had planned for Meredith did not fit this inspiration. So, we decided to throw out our ideas and just start driving down a road near her home. We continued to drive until we saw a path that led into the woods behind a liquor store. We pulled over and headed into the path. I’d say this plan was a little more Fleet Foxes than we originally had in mind. The rest of the shoot we continued to drive with no destination in mind and only stopped when we were inspired by something we saw.. At one point we ended up in a small cemetery, and at another point we ended up down a dirt road with an amazing tree overhang. All the while not really knowing where we actually were. Meredith’s favorite songs by Fleet Foxes are Sim Sala Bim or One Another Ocean. If you get a chance, put it on one of these tracks while viewing these photos. We had way too much fun telling Meredith’s story. We hope you enjoy these photos as much as we do.
